A mother had been talking to a friend and asked what kind of workout equipment her friend had at her house. The friend replies, "I have a rower." The mom says "Oh, I would like to run on a treadmill". This mom then talks to her husband, who says "I am not buying you a treadmill, but you can go to the school and take advantage of the outdoors and run with your son at school."
This is a great sign that parents can be involved with their kids in programs at school. It was inspiring to see this mom and her son running laps together for his Running and Walking Club.
How did students and adults work together as a team?
We have used our Running and Walking Club to get kids involved and moving during their lunches on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It has been a success because the kids receive charms for mileage achievements and a star on our running board with their name and how far they've run. It gets updated once per week.
What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
The beginning of the school year was hard to get things going, as we had no access to our field. Many kids were encouraged to participate in the Running and Walking Club. We made the program easier to run by acquiring scanners to scan each child's barcode. We are able to attach the scanners to a computer and have all the information at our fingertips.
