The 5th and 6th grade Fuel Up to Play 60 students came up with the idea of working with the special needs students at our school to help them get healthy and fit. They continue to meet once a week with this special group of students during their recess time, to do various activities with them such as: basic stretches to music, creating posters, reading books on exercise and eating healthy, etc. They all look forward to this special time every week!
How did students and adults work together as a team?
The FUTP 60 students create their ideas, propose them to me for approval, then meet with the special education teacher and brief her on the activities. There are also numerous adult aids in the room that get involved.
How did you accomplish your goals?
They accomplished their goals by creating a plan, staying motivated, reserving the gym, and following through consistently with their meeting.
What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
The students ran into a few challenges so far with their project. It was a little challenging to find a time when the gym was available and the special needs kids could meet. Working with peers that have Autism and other disabilities bring an entire host of challenges. The students were so patient and kind and loving. It has really been a beautiful bonding experience for all involved.
