We began a Marathon Kids Club this year at Milan Middle School and Milan High School. The club gave students of ALL ability levels the chance to participate in an athletic club offered by their school with their peers. As a bonus, the club was offered throughout the school year! Marathon Kid Members met 2 or 3 times a week to run or walk together. The students kept track of their mileage each practice. Students earned prizes from Nike after completing 26.2 miles, a marathon! Throughout the year, students ran 2-4 marathons. The club not only increased one’s physical activity, but helped the students realize that they were more alike than different! Thank you, FUTP 60 for introducing Marathon Kids to us! We hope to have a Marathon Kids Club next year!
How did you accomplish your goals?
Students and Staff set a long term goal before beginning the club, and set short term goals at each practice.
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
Practices were scheduled throughout the school year. Students were encouraged to log miles and physical activity when on school breaks to continue being active at least 60 minutes a day.
What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
Sometimes students did not want to stay after school to run. Students and Staff encouraged one another, and reminded each other of their goals, commitment, and incentive prizes. Staff and students also respected each other, realizing that everyone needed a break now and then, and that a balanced life was healthy too!
