Extending Breakfast Beyond Breakfast

Our success story at Rogers New Technology High School has been incredible to watch this spring. We have implemented the Grab and Go Breakfast Play and extended our breakfast hours till 9:30 am for all of our students. I noticed a large number of students who were skipping breakfast every day because they travel in the mornings to and from multiple campuses and travel to our local community college for courses in the morning. Our high school students are now able to swing by the cafeteria and pick up a freshly made smoothie or yogurt parfait and eat on the way to or in their 2nd hour classes.

We have seen our breakfast numbers double over the past two months and the line at 9:30 am for Grab and Go Breakfast is at least 100 students every day when we serve the smoothies or fresh fruit yogurt parfaits. Our cafeteria staff has developed 5 different flavors for the smoothies made fresh in the mornings in 3 large commercial blenders and then served over the next 2-3 hours and extending into lunch if we have left over smoothies from the breakfast lines. Currently our cafeteria workers prepare approximately 200 smoothies on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 200 yogurt parfaits on Wednesdays. We sell out every day and if our staff could logistically prepare the smoothies and parfaits every day, our students would definitely purchase these breakfast healthy options we have added to or school menu.

Every time I walk through the cafeteria I witness young people smiling and chatting with their friends. Our Grab and Go extended hour breakfast program has made a dramatic impact in the lives of so many young people. A nutritious shake or parfait is a perfect option for any teenager in the morning. Thank you for helping us with the funds to start our high school off on the right foot and become super successful with the Fuel Up to Play 60 Grab and Go Breakfast program. My students tell me this it is COOL way to promote the importance of feeding your body and brain. Here at Rogers New Technology High School it has become popular for ALL KIDS to cruise by the cafeteria and walk down the hall or in class with a yummy smoothie or parfait.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

We have extended our breakfast hours to 9:30 AM every day to help our high school students be able to swing by the cafeteria and grab breakfast smoothies and yogurt parfaits beyond breakfast!
