The trial we've conducting with second and some of third grade has been more than successful. The students take the extras to their room and have them for snacks in the afternoon. This gives us a win-win situation. Kids who only eat when they're at school get a little something before they go home, and we have less food being thrown away. By allowing uneaten food to be brought back to the classroom after lunch, we notice students who may not have sufficient food at home are now able to eat later in the school day. Students can now concentrate on their schoolwork and not on being hungry. At the same time, children are leading by example that food is not to be wasted and how their classmates benefit from saving it from the trash pile on a daily basis.
