Access to Healthy Foods, Community Involvement, Physical Activity Participation, Teamwork
Two to three times a year, I try to host a Family Fit Night. The goal of the activity is to get the community involved with exercise and show how working out and playing together is fun and encouraging. This helps with accountability for families and kids pulling parents and parents pulling kids into a workout routine. The Family Fit Night begins with a slideshow presenting healthy food choices and statistics of America. Following the slideshow is an activity in the gym. We start with a tabata warm up and then play a game or do an activity together, such as parachutes games and activities. The night concludes in the cafeteria as families take a healthy snack to go.
How did students and adults work together as a team?
They work together in the games and use teamwork for skills and strategies to help one another be successful in the activity.
What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
Challenges are when families don't RSVP and i don't know what activity is to prepare ahead of time.
What improvements have you seen at your school?
I've seen families more out and about and hear families talking about exercise together and encouraging better food choices. i laugh when the child calls the parents out on a poor food choice.
