Family Fitness Night

We held a family night that included three stations for students and parents to rotate through during the evening. We greeted parents and gave introductions of the activities and talked about Fuel Up to Play 60 and the importance of being active 60 minutes a day and making healthy eating choices. Station one was our nutrition station with Melissa from Iowa State Extension and Pick a Better Snack. She had four students explain the program and how making healthy choices is important. She then showed the group how to make a yogurt parfait with yogurt and blueberries. The next station was Action-Based Learning with several staff members. They shared fun, easy activities parents can do with household items to make learning fun and active at home. The final station was in the gym with 10 fitness stations, including our new climbing wall. Each station lasted 20 minutes and the plan is to hold another Family Fitness Night in the spring.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

During the Action-Based Learning station, the parents and students worked together as a team to gain an understanding of how to apply the activities learned during Family Fitness Night at home.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

The plan is to have another Family Fitness Night and share addition activities for parents to do at home with their child to increase their activity time.
