Our students in our Fuel Up to Play 60 class have put on an event twice so far this year. It is the Family Fun Fitness Night. The students get into groups of 5 students each and come up with an activity that they want to promote at our great night. Parents, students, and their whole families are invited to an hour and a half event where they rotate every 15 minutes to each station and either do physical activities, learn about nutrition, or enjoy a healthy snack. We have had activities that range from relay races, hula hooping, parachute games, tag games, yoga, "minute to win it" games, fitness Simon says, MyPlate jeopardy, muscular strength challenges to enjoying yummy student-made smoothies, and yogurt parfaits. Each time we have finished off the evening with a prize drawing of some equipment that students could win to take home to continue physical activities at home.
What improvements have you seen at your school?
The students are excited to involve their families in their learning.
How did you accomplish your goals?
The students worked in class as teams and help to go through different steps to come up with their activities. Each step had to go through advisor approval before they could move on to the next thing.
What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
It was hard to predict attendance but when we have leftover smoothie ingredients we offered a smoothie taste testing the next morning for breakfast at our school, we had over 250 students come in and try our smoothies. When we ended up with extra parfait material we served it to students the next morning at breakfast and have them tell us if they would like to add it to our regular menu.
