We invited local farmers to come to our school and share their stories of how they help get food to our students. Dairy farmers brought a cow and two calves (twins) who were not even 24 hours old yet for students to see and pet. The dairy farmers talked about their farm and raising dairy cows. Another farmer brought a hay baler and showed how it worked and why hay is important. A student from the high school FFA brought a piece of farmer equipment and let student sit in it and told them how it helped on the farm. Another farmer brought their state fair champion pigs and talked about them. After the students visited the farm stations the enjoyed a strawberry banana smoothie and meet Buttercup, the Dairy Association mascot and received a small gift bag. It was a great and informative day.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

The challenge was that I put Farmer Day in the fall when the farmers were very busy in the fields. I would suggest if anyone wants to do this, pick a time when the farmers are not in the field. They are very willing to help at other times of the year.
