First Time Fuel Up to Play 60 Participants

"Go Pack Go!" was the cheer Franklin Elementary School students began their day with on an announcement from Nurse Kellea. Her voice rang out over the morning announcements to congratulate them for being chosen as a school to participate in the Fuel up to Play 60 program! Students also eagerly signed their pledge banner during lunch time. In doing so, they pledged to learn more about eating fruits, veggies, and dairy and about how to "fuel" up their bodies with 60 minutes of activity daily. Students were motivated by the life sized Morgan Burnett greeting them on their way into the lunchroom and holding the marker in his hand that they used to sign! Even our principal and teachers took the pledge! Teachers learned about the Fuel up to Play 60 program at a staff meeting in an engaging power point presentation that started with 5 jumping jacks. Our student team was identified during the staff meeting by an eager teacher volunteering her classroom. Franklin Elementary School is fueled and ready to play this season!

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Students and our teachers and principal signed the pledge banner during lunch time and in our classrooms to pledge to learn more about fruits, vegetables and dairy. Signing also committed us to being more active at recess by trying new games and encouraging someone other than we usually play with to participate as well.

How did you accomplish your goals?

After learning about what the "fuel" in Fuel Up to Play and "60" in Play 60 means, we brainstormed ways to learn about more foods and different games we could try at recess.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

Our student team plans to meet at least monthly during the entire school year. We have set a goal to meet to discuss healthy eating and activity changes for our student body. We plan to work together as a student team to be visible at recess and lunch time practicing these changes and encourage others at our school to do the same.
