Fit Friday at Middlesex
I began teaching at Middlesex Elementary almost four years ago. Middlesex Elementary is a Title One School and many students are living below the poverty level. As an eager teacher, fresh out of college I noticed that there were limited clubs that focused on maintaining a healthy lifestyle. I began Fit Friday three years ago with forty members ranging from eight to ten. Students of all shapes, sizes and ability levels were urged to join to begin their healthy lifestyle journey. Every Friday morning we meet for sixty minutes before school and train for a 5k. We train for three months then invite community members, parents and our school to cheer on our runners during the race and at the pep rally. This club has helped to show students the importance of perseverance, teamwork and healthy choices. We are currently training for our third 5k and will be running it in November with over sixty runners. These runners have to meet behavioral expectations and be role models in the classroom. We are so proud of the motivation we have seen and can't wait until race day!

What improvements have you seen at your school?

We have seen positive peer interactions being built that foster teamwork, perseverance and pride. The students feel more invested in their community and take ownership and pride in their health.
