Physical Activity Participation

In this Play we wanted to increase the amount of physical activity breaks students get throughout the day. We supplied fit sticks to 80% of our classroom teachers. The fit sticks were provided to us by the Healthy Kids Club. Through our student wellness program, we created a SMART goal around the amount of physical activity breaks in the classroom. Our research found that 88% of classroom teachers used physical activity breaks at least once a day, two to three times a week. We are happy with the amount of physical activity our students get throughout the school day and would love to see those numbers increase for next year.

How did you accomplish your goals?

We accomplished our goals by reaching out to our staff and getting the ones who were interested in using the fit sticks. We then supplied the interested staff members with the fit stick set and monitored their use. At the end of the semester we collected data and surveyed the staff. Our data showed that we met our goal, but that there is always room for improvement.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

One of the challenges we faced was getting all the teachers to receive and use the fit sticks in their classroom. We overcame this by respecting their decision and not forcing them to take a fit stick set or use them. One of the challenges the teachers faced was getting students back on task after completing a physical activity break. They were able to overcome that by going over the expectations and doing the breaks at a transition period from one task to another.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

Some improvements we have seen is that students enjoy the physical activity breaks and they like doing the activities that are suggested on the sticks. The physical activity breaks help the students get their energy out and refocus on their assigned task.
