Fitness and Safety Around the Water!
In our physical education classes, students are taught how to swim and improve their fitness levels, as well as how to be safe around the water. It was amazing to see how many students didn't know how to swim or the importance of being safe around the water. So our Fuel Up to Play Squad started an after school swim program. Two groups were set up: students who didn't know how to swim and students who wanted to use water as a great physical activity. Both groups are combined at the end of the sessions to discuss water safety such as drowning victims or emergencies around the water.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

We had after school meetings about how we were going to implement the program.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

We had stories from our students about how they are not afraid of the water and how students are encouraging each other to work out in the pool.

How did you accomplish your goals?

Our PE teacher is a certified lifeguard and is also a certified bus driver, which made it easy for us to implement.
