Fitness is Fun

Here in the West Orange Public School District we incorporate fitness into our daily activities. Our Physical Education Supervisor, Kevin Alvine, developed a 10 Minutes of Fitness program where we implement fitness into every class on a daily basis. We incorporate many components of fitness including muscular strength and endurance, cardiovascular endurance, agility, balance and coordination just to name a few. We also implement monthly fitness breaks where one of our 5th grade students reads a nutritional fact and we play a fun song that the students can dance to while in their classroom. All of these techniques have helped improve students' fitness levels dramatically. At the Kelly School, which was renamed after astronauts Mark and Scott Kelly who attended this school as kids, we have also implemented a program where we track student’s steps as we try to reach Mars by the end of the year. It’s a lot of steps but hopefully we will be able to reach that goal.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

We have seen fitness levels of all of the students increase dramatically. They also feel better and are proud of themselves on how much they have improved.
