Fourth Grade Community Collaboration
At STEM Launch K-8, we struggle with the issue of having a lack of walkable healthy food stores in our community. Our school is in a "food desert" with a Little Caesar's and 7-11 as the closest options. Survey results show that some families do not get enough exercise due to a lack of time or the high costs of gym memberships. These are just a few components of the problem that students have already identified, but we believe there are more. Our fourth-grade students are currently taking an inquiry-based approach to determine how our school community can improve our nutritional intake as well as increase physical activity. So far they have many innovative solutions which they will present during "Every Kid Healthy Week"! 1. Students are learning about brain science and how our systems are impacted by healthy nutrition and activity choices. We held an outdoor Family Fit Fest on May 2nd from 3:45 to 5:30 in partnership with the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. We had many wellness partners lined up to present at this event!  Lastly, we are also looking for donations and/or grant opportunities in order to fill "Healthy Living Boxes" that we could give to STEM Launch families at Family Fit Fest. So far, we have received donations from RX bar which we plan to include in there as well as a few small grants for which to buy materials. The kids are hoping to add other healthy non-perishable foods, recipe cards, etc.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Our students helped with community outreach. We are fortunate to have an amazing partnership with the City of Thornton! We are visiting our Thornton Community Center on Monday for a field trip with all fourth graders! We will do three different physical activities/classes, and will also learn about careers related to wellness. We can't wait! Thanks, Fuel to Up to Play, for the motivation with the amazing assembly earlier this year!
