We kicked off our 21 day challenge by having an "Eat Around the Rainbow" during lunch for each grade level. The nutrition department and our fabulous cafe provided snacks of many different kinds to each child to try. This started a lesson and thorough discussion with students in PE. The discussion with students led to student bringing in many different kinds of fruits that students enjoy at home. We asked students to take a field trip to the grocery store and choose new fruits and veggies. Students sent in their pictures of healthy eating. Parents emailed telling us that the continued discussion and awareness changed the way they are eating at home.
What improvements have you seen at your school?
Students continuously share what they are eating at home. Even after we finished the challenge, students still share with what they are eating. We are constantly talking about nutrition as well as food dyes, chemicals, high fructose corn syrup, and other additives in the food we choose to eat. We are dedicated in teaching kids that they do have a choice and that it is up to them to stay aware of what is the best choices are to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
