Ann King, Westchester Academy For International Studies
Students are learning how to create healthy snacks by adding fresh fruits, veggies, and dairy to their diets. To start off the new semester and year, students prepared snacks for a Tea Party that included delicious, healthy snack foods. Students made several Tea sandwiches, dips, fruit, and a cheese tray for the event. Cucumber and shredded carrot-cheese tea sandwiches were prepared and showcased on a tiered serving platter. Items included cut up fruits served in a pineapple to make an appealing presentation, dill and freshly made hummus dip for veggies and whole grain crackers, and a cheese tray, all prepared by students. Students were excited with their Tea Party and learned simple snack recipes they could prepare at home
How did students and adults work together as a team?
Adults supervised the prep stations as students learned how to cut foods, and prepare the recipes. Demonstrations by the adults prior to students working was key to safety with knives as well as learning how to read the recipes and prepare the foods.
