Fuel Up at Lunch

At our school we have devised a schoolwide initiative during our six lunch shifts to provide ALL students with the opportunity to be physically active, as long as they have finished their healthy lunches. Students have 10 minutes to eat, and then they can choose to report to the gym for the remaining 15 minutes of their lunch time. Their classroom teachers then pick them up to report back to class. I have attached the PowerPoint that we showed our staff at our beginning of the year meeting that will explain this initiative in detail. :)

What improvements have you seen at your school?

Students are able to release some of their extra energy and perform better throughout the school day in their academic classes!

How did students and adults work together as a team?

The PE teachers work to cover the lunchtime initiative, but the classroom teachers assist during their duty time as well...and both teachers/administrators have the ability to use this initiative as leverage if a student is struggling with behavior.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

We have six staggered lunch shifts for three different grade levels, which made transitions tricky...but we all worked together and figured out how to make it work.
