Fuel Up to Play 60 at Rock Creek

On the nutrition side we purchased banners for the cafeteria area. The banners really improve the look of the room. They are good reminders for students about making good food choices. Students commented how much they enjoy the banners when they were first put up. On the physical activity side we purchased a class set of heart rate monitors that included a case to store them. They allow students to check their heart rate as frequently as they like without the inconvenience of wearing a transmitter belt. Their heart rate is displayed each time they press the sensor on their heart rate monitor. It is very motivating for the students to see their heart rate. They push themselves to increase their heart rate and like to check in with peers to compare. I have seen an increase in their activity since implementing the heart rate monitors into my curriculum.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

I have seen some impressive improvements in my students' activity. They love the opportunity to keep moving so they can keep their heart rates up. It has provided me the opportunity to discuss the different heart rate zones and what they mean to their health.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

The students and teachers have worked well together as a team. Our food service team, nurse, and myself have worked with the students to implement Fuel Up to Play 60. We have a successful student leadership team that is highly motivated to work with us to educate the students about why it is important to eat healthy and be active 60 minutes a day.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

I plan on making this Play be a part of Rock Creek for years to come. The banners will be a permanent part of our cafeteria area. The heart rate monitors will be a constant part of my curriculum. The students really enjoy them and their activity level has increased since implementing them. It allows me to seamlessly incorporate the importance to exercise and how it impacts our health.
