Decreasing Lunch Food Waste at Granville Middle
Trenten and Wyatt M. contacted our high school ecology teacher, who has a compost pile, about composting food waste. They researched the topic of food waste, introduced a brief talk for each of the 2 lunch periods, ordered incentives for the lunch period who had the least food and other waste at lunch, got a trash can, developed a system for weighing the food waste and lunch trash, and started to compost the food waste on 3/16/18 for a week.

How did you accomplish your goals?

Talked to the students and adults who could make this happen (chef and ecology teacher), got the supplies, and talked to the students about why they should compost food waste and decrease food waste

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

Getting student buy in

What improvements have you seen at your school?

We had less food waste than we expected when it was measured the first day of the project. We are struggling with teaching students about what to compost and getting them to put it in the right trash can.
