School to Farm - Food Waste Awareness Challenge

The FUTP 60 student leadership team at Cherry Creek Elementary School hosted a food waste/garbage awareness campaign during all lunch periods for 3 consecutive days. We learned we threw out nearly 260 lbs of trash and that nearly 117 of those lbs was food waste, which we were able to divert from the landfill. Thank you to Partridge Creek Farm for taking this food waste to make compost to eventually grow more food! Thank you also to Northern Michigan University student helpers (Casey Devooght and Kelsey Weyland) for their time and dedication in playing with garbage during their spring break! We also learned we could reduce more waste if we were able to recycle our milk cartons. Is anyone else in the state of MI recycling their school's milk cartons? As the Program Advisor to these dedicated student leaders, Lanae Joubert is VERY proud of her team, the school and this projects' outcomes.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

The Cherry Creek Elementary School FUTP 60 Student Leadership team (5th graders) helped to advertise the food waste challenge, educate students about their waste during lunch time, helped to weigh the waste, tally results and announce the winners.
