Upon the start of the 2017-18 school year, the Brookings Public School district outlined a “healthy snacking” policy and snack suggestion list for each school. With this new initiative, our school wellness committee chose to build upon the theme of “Snacking Smarter Schoolwide.” Medary Elementary conducted a Wellness Fair for all grade levels during our Fuel Up to Play 60 Kick-Off week. Each grade level had assigned topics and community guest presentations over the following topics: Seat Belt Safety, Hand washing, Healthy vs. Unhealthy Foods, and Drink This Not That. As a culminating activity of the week, local Bel Brands donated a “healthy cheese snack” for every student and staff member in our building. Our student ambassadors assisted with adding fun filled words of wisdom to each snack and delivering the snacks throughout the school. This may sound “Cheesy”, but our Fuel Up to Play 60 Kick-Off week was “Grate”!

How did you accomplish your goals?

Our school wellness committee met on two different occasions at the start of the school year. The group chose one nutrition play and one activity play, divided up jobs, and immediately started recruiting community guest speakers for the Wellness Fair. Individual members assisted by collaborating with grade level teachers and specified speakers; picking up donated cheese; creating and displaying bulletin boards/posters; and working with student ambassadors.
