For my Physical Activity breaks, I chose the stabilizer balls, which is activity throughout the entire class time instead of breaks within the class. Stabilizer balls increase core strength, improve balance and increase better posture. I am the only teacher that teaches 6th-8th grade health, so basically every student will have the opportunity to share in this activity.
How did you accomplish your goals?
Stabilizer balls provide movement for the entire class, so each student will experience the stabilizer balls at least 9 weeks throughout the year.
What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
Some students became a little wild on the balls so the classes had to develop rules for the stabilizer ball. Students understood that if they began to bounce too high, possibly fall off, or any other inappropriate behavior with the stabilizer balls that that student would lose the opportunity to use the balls, they would need to get a classroom chair. Sometimes a student would lose this the entire time during the 9 weeks.
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
Since my classes do not exceed 30 students, I do have extra stabilizer balls, so if one would burst, I have a replacement. I have enough to last until the end of the year. For next year, I will need to use my faculty money to purchase a few more. My class is the only class in the school who has these.
