Get Up and Dance
This year, we emphasized dance during recess and PE class to promote the benefits that it provides. Dance helps in developing many attributes of a growing child. Dance helps children mature physically, emotionally, socially, and cognitively. The physical benefits of dance include: improved condition of your heart and lungs, increased muscular strength, endurance and motor fitness, improved muscle tone and strength, weight management and stronger bones. Dance videos were projected onto a screen and the students would follow the dance steps. We used different websites such as YouTube (Just Dance) and GoNoodle to implement dance into our program.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

At first the students were hesitant to dance because they were embarrassed but coach and I decided to join in and soon everyone was up and dancing!

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We will continue to use dance as a tool during PE class and recess because it provides so many benefits to us and our students.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

Many of our students' social skills have improved. We had many students who would shy away from social situations but dance has opened up communication between many of our students. We spoke to them about respecting each other and just having fun. It's been a positive attribute to our program.
