Fuel Up to Play 60 Funds were used to provide each class with a recess pack. The recess pack included footballs, soccer balls, Frisbees, jump ropes, Wiffle ball and bat, bases, kickballs, 4 square balls, basketballs and hula hoops.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

Upon arriving at Bell Academy, they had just completed a multi-year grant for magnet schools and were 3 years out of receiving a district wide Carol White Physical Education Program. I had a small room filled with office supplies and the little physical education equipment. I had no place to have class. The 22x16 room became the classroom during inclement weather but had to be quiet. I wrote grants and received 2 FUTP 60 grants that have been instrumental in our cafe, classroom and recess activity.

How did you accomplish your goals?

Bell Academy is supportive of my goal to have a great health/physical education program and to get our students active during recess and classroom activity breaks. We needed equipment and a place for Physical Education. With multiple grants, parent contributions and community support we have the basic equipment needed, Our FUTP 60 grants have given our students an opportunity to have recess equipment and yoga class packs. The FUTP 60 grants partnership with the cafe helps to emphasize nutrition.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

Our students are aware of the importance of staying active and eating healthy. They understand and recall how our bodies function and the role nutrition plays. Recess is a whirlwind of activity and our physical education program now has a 30x40 heated and cooled classroom. The PE Palace was funded through multiple grants and community support. This building includes a 7x40 foot long traverse climbing wall that was received from a grant and installed by our local college outdoor program.
