FUTP 60 Participants "COVER" Playground and Track Issues

A needs assessment identified Wren Hollow students' desire to have a shade structure installed by the track or playground. This will allow a break from the sun during track work and recess, as well as offer a place for students to gather. The shade structure will benefit the community, as well, because our track, blacktop and field are often used for night and weekend activities. With the help of Wren Hollow's PTO and the Parkway School District, 3 location options were identified and presented. Wren Hollow's Student Wellness Leaders and fellow Fuel Up to Play 60 participants got involved. We visited the 3 proposed shade structure locations and completed a Plus/Delta chart to discuss the pros and cons of each location. The discussions included if some equipment (swing, picnic table, bars) could be relocated if the shade structure would be put in its place. The Students Wellness Leaders and FUTP 60 students discussed all of the options and voted on their shade structure location choice. The results were presented to Wren Hollow's principal. The students are proud of their decision-making and synergy...they are excited to watch the project unfold!

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

When the shade structure is installed we will plan a dedication ceremony.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

Instead of removing existing equipment, it will be relocated.
