Recess Refresh — It's Not so Elementary!
Topics:
Physical Activity Participation, Student Leadership,  Teamwork
My team has worked very hard painting lines on the playground for free throw lines and now we have six four-square games. They have written letters to local businesses asking for monetary and matrials donations for a Gaga Ball Pit. I am so proud of them! They were able to get three local businesses to donate the hardware, lumber and brackets. The team has three other businesses donating money for the flooring and the high school students making the pit at our school through their Tech classes. Our playground definitely has a new look, with so many more students active now.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

The students contacted local businesses, talked with them on the phone, emailed them and wrote letters to make this happen.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

This year, the students were the leaders that made the contacts they needed to get funding for such a great recess activity. In the years to come, the students will have the equipment to stay active throughout their years at our school.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

Since they have painted lines on the black top for four-square and free throw lines, I have seen more students participate in activity. I expect to see that number increase as the Gaga Ball Pit is finished.
