Garden Soup Challenge
The Green Thumb Initiative (GTI) of the Rochester Alternative Learning Center is a program designed with experiential learners in mind. Our goal is to meet standards and build skills through establishing a school garden. To promote healthy eating in our school, the GTI students hosted a Garden Soup Challenge. We used various vegetables from the garden to prepare three soups—Cheesy Garden Vegetable, Spicy Pumpkin and Zuppa Toscana. The Cheesy Garden Vegetable was the clear favorite, but the real winners were the students who were able to try eating vegetables they have never had before, in a delicious way.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Students and adults worked together as a team by collaborating on which soups to choose, based upon what was fresh in the garden, and what we had already preserved. Students and staff also shared the work of preparing the soup. The students led the taste testing and data collection portion of the event. It was a very successful day.
