Gardening our way to good health

We have grown our own vegetables at Barnes Elementary. We have taught our students about vegetables and the way they help our body stay healthy. We also grew our own school garden with squash, green beans and many other types of vegetables. Our kids actively participated, from pulling weeds to tasting the delicious vegetables we picked from our garden. We will challenge our students to grow their own gardens at home to practice what they have learned.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We have challenged our students to grow their own gardens at home. They are to get their parents involved and teach them what they have learned. We asked that they continue to practice their gardening skills and challenge each other to grow the garden with the most variety. They will continue to stay active by pulling weeds, watering and harvesting.

How did you accomplish your goals?

We took students from each class during PE and gave them a responsibility. While they were pulling weeds, turning the soil or watering, they were given a lesson on the types of vegetables they were growing.
