Gardening with the 2nd and 3rd Graders at Granville Elementary School

The FUTP 60 group joined with the FCCLA and helped the 2nd graders start the plants and 3rd graders plan a vegetable, herb and flower garden teaching the Science plant standards.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Middle school students planned the garden with the teachers and parents, received and purchased gardening seeds and tools, and 3 organic vegetable plots for 350 2nd and 3rd graders at the Granville Elementary School. Community members also helped us plant and weed the garden plots with the children.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

The garden grew loads of vegetables we used for a salad bar for 2nd and 3rd graders at the end of the 2016 spring. Then in the fall of 2016 the middle school students demonstrated salsa & pesto to 2nd and 3rd graders at Granville Elementary and 4th graders at Granville Intermediate school. This summer the Granville Elementary Garden Club harvested and ate vegetables and donated food from garden to the Newark Salvation Army. We also donated vegetables to our school district lunch program.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

Children at the elementary and intermediate schools in Granville loved the salad bar, salsa and pesto and are eating more vegetables and dairy foods this year.
