We have started a walking program at Washington Elementary and all 4th and 5th grade classes are participating. There are 2 courses set in the playground and one in the gym. Students are encouraged to walk and stay active during recess and PE. They count their laps on whichever course they are walking and then scan their card with a QR code on an iPad in their classroom to record their miles. They are also allowed to keep track of mileage for any walking or running they do outside of school. Students can earn a chain and charms to show their mileage accomplishments.
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
As an advisor, I was worried the "newness" of the program would wear off and students would begin not tracking miles. To help keep them interested, I decided to incorporate different challenges into our program. We are doing a veggie challenge to eat vegetables at supper everyday for a month, get your parents moving challenge to have parents exercise with them at home, and a beat my miles challenge where students try to beat the miles I run for a month while I train for a 10k.
