Getting Students to Move

Flag Football seems to be just another unit students go through during the school year. Recently, I found the NFL Flag Football curriculum PDF online and decided to print it out and use some of the lessons during the unit as well as print off certificates. The students were more engaged than I have ever seen before. Watching them get excited about running routes, throwing the footballs, and playing activities they may have never done before was amazing. What really topped it off was at the end of the unit and passing out the certificates, students were excited to get something at the end for participating and what made it even better was having NFL teams printed on them. This alone got students who would never play football in their entire life actively engaged and loving it just because of this program.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Every day in class, we had different teams so everyone had the chance to work with different people and socialize with peers that they typically wouldn't. There were also different team captains everyday so students knew what it felt like to have a leadership roll and know what it's like to work with players who might be struggling and how to cheer them back on.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

The students loved this so much that my colleague and I plan on making intramural programs for each grade level and having tournaments once a week during lunch.
