Access to Healthy Foods, Community Involvement, Physical Activity Participation
Alki Elementary Seagulls (K-5 students) are meeting weekly at breakfast time with Nursing Students from University of Washington and Seattle Central College to share breakfast and participate in a "My Plate" lesson.
During recess on Thursdays, all students are encouraged to participate in the free Run/Walk Club. Their laps are recorded on an iPad. Awards for participation and distances will be given in mid-March.
Family Fitness Night, February 15, 2018, was an opportunity for students to bring their families to meet the Washington State Dairy Ambassador and other health promotion partners. Seventy four families participated.
Through these efforts, free and open to all students, healthy habits are being developed.
How did students and adults work together as a team?
Students gather in the cafeteria after eating breakfast to discuss the food groups and how they can grow healthy, with the nursing students facilitating. At recess, the children are encouraged to run and walk rather than sit and talk. Often the adults run/walk with the youth. Recognition for all student participants will be given in mid-March.
