We used our Fuel Up to Play 60 monies for garden seeds, fertilizer and other supplies and are gardening with 14 classes and 350 2nd and 3rd graders to start 3 vegetable and flower garden plots to teach Ohio Science Standards and eating salads and other vegetables grown in the garden. We also started an elementary garden club and every class is involved in gardening
How did students and adults work together as a team?
We collaborated with parents, elementary teachers, Dawes Arboretum and community members to start these 3 garden plots and each class is planting vegetables at home and in the 3 garden plots at Granville Elementary School
How did you accomplish your goals?
Planned the garden, bought supplies and planned lessons for each class. We made video to give instructions and had many hands on activities. When the lettuce and other salad greens grow, we will have a salad lesson for all 2nd and 3rd graders. Then in the fall we'll have more vegetable cooking lessons for them and work with our Get Up and Grow garden club all summer.
What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
Starting vegetables inside is hard and getting the lessons organized so every child has a task that contributes to the garden is hard.
