Green Smoothie Day

Green Smoothie Day was planned by four students and the Wellness Committee Program Advisrs. The four students, Program Advisors, school cooks, a few parents, teachers, and Vista Volunteers implemented the day. Green smoothies were blended and placed in 4 oz serving cups in the AM. All students were offered the smoothies during three lunch periods. All staff were offered servings. 89% of the students tasted. After tasting, the students received an "I ate a healthy snack" sticker. The students were asked to guess the secret ingredient that made it green. After learning that spinach was the secret ingredient, comments like "I hate spinach but I LOVE the smoothie" were heard. Many asked for seconds and the recipe.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

Small blenders purchased with grant money will be used by individual classrooms for small batches. The school will purchase an industrial blender for larger batches. Smoothies will then become a permanent menu item.
