We give our students a Valentine every year. The Valentine is a challenge to perform 60 minutes of outside of school activity. We ask our students to include their family in this challenge. The student records what they did to reach their "60 minutes of healthy heart time" and then they write it on their heart (Valentine), cut it out, bring it back to school the next day, turn it in and grab another heart for that night. We then post the hearts in the hallway...showing all of their physical efforts outside of the normal school times of recess and PE. We will do a little twist on this in April and focus on healthy eating..."Eat the Rainbow" challenge or "Field of Fitness". Each student will write their healthy snack choice on a flower of the matching color of the fruit or vegetable for that day's snack. We will then attach them to the wall and form a Field of Fitness or a Rainbow!

How did students and adults work together as a team?

This challenge was for them personally and including their family members.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We are going to change the challenge in April to focus on food choices - a flower in the color of the fruit or vegetable that they eat for a snack that day.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

Students are proud to share their activities with us...as soon as they walk in the door. We can do better at promotion and maybe including a separate heart for a "family activity", not just a single one for the student.
