Harlan Health Fair - SMOOTHIES!

Our FUTP 60 play this year was Breakfast – Anytime, Anywhere! Increasing our breakfast participation has been a goal of district and the superintendent for two years now, so we were determined to make this year the year that we get kids excited about breakfast! We formed our FUTP 60 team at the beginning of the year and it is composed of approximately 15 of our 4th and 5th grade students. We had our team spread the word that we just received a blender (through FUTP 60 funds) and that we’re going to start making HOMEMADE smoothies on Thursdays for breakfast. By selecting one day a week as a feature day we found that we could keep the weekly excitement of smoothies... and compete with bagel day! We were able to pair the fruit and low-fat dairy smoothie with a grain to be able to qualify as a reimbursable meal. We have dramatically increased our breakfast sales on these days. We then participated in a health fair at Harlan Elementary school. We had our FUTP 60 team here to promote our smoothies and low-fat dairy. By having our health fair, we were able to teach parents about what we’re doing in our cafeterias for breakfast! We also passed out smoothie recipe cards so that parents can try new smoothies at home! This Success Story would not of been possible without the support of Fuel Up to Play 60 and the United Dairy Counsel of Michigan. We were able to get funding from FUTP 60 for the blender and necessary items for this. An important component for us is the communication and support among myself in nutrition, our PE teacher, and school staff support. THANK YOU to everyone who makes this possible!
