Hawthorne Hill Elementary Offers a Rainbow of Local Fruits and Veggies
We are still utilizing the food serving equipment from a previous grant to continue to offer fresh fruit and veggies that are purchased locally. The more exposure our students get to these foods, the more they eat. We also like to create unique low fat dipping sauces. We try to set our self serve bar up like a restaurant bar. We have moved completely away from looking like an institution and now consider ourselves Hornet Cafe. We encourage students to taste new items and also post information on nutrients, different varieties and also tastes. We are now also offering sandwich toppings so the students can "dress" up their sandwiches.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

Students are consuming more fruits and vegetables. They are asking for them to be offered more often. The teachers are happier and finally say we are offering healthy options. Students are learning about different fruits, vegetables and also food groups.
