Healthy Cooking After-School Club

An afterschool healthy cooking club was started at Lovettsville Elementary by our Program Advisor and 10 Fuel Up to Play 60 students. They met after school eight times to plan, prepare, and take home a different healthy snack each day. Basic directions and recipes were provided. Students had the choice of adding or taking away from the recipe based on their likes/allergies. Each student took home a large enough snack for their entire family to share at dinner.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

A challenge that we overcame was getting permission. We used full transparency regarding the ingredients, sanitary conditions, food prep and storage, and safety guidelines to the parents before beginning the program. It made the club much more successful!
