Healthy Cooking Challenge, Breakfast Edition!

Our school invests in a week-long emphasis on wellness each year, called Live Life Well Week. We plan all kinds of activities and events, including speakers, tournaments, a chance for students to try different fitness classes, and healthy eating promotions. This year, we combined our Healthy Breakfast with our Healthy Cooking Challenge. Students in our Nutrition and Fitness classes created their own healthy recipes using the MyPlate Guidelines.  After an initial round of judging, our finalist recipes were made for our whole student body to sample and vote on! It was a great event that highlighted the importance of eating breakfast, as well as giving our students and staff a few new recipes to try!

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Students were given an assignment to create their own recipes, and then they made and served them to the student body. The planning of the event required staff, parents and student participation to make it all happen!

How did you accomplish your goals?

We wanted an emphasis on the importance of breakfast, and by making this year's Healthy Cooking Challenge's focus just that, we provided the school with new recipes and a fresh new look at breakfast.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We are continuing to promote eating breakfast by implementing other breakfast initiatives such as Second Chance Breakfast. We are trying to promote it to get our number of participants up, by brainstorming ideas with students, and trying new ways to teach everyone about the importance of eating breakfast.
