This year at Rose Shaw we started a healthy detectives campaign. Last year our school received a Silver Award from Alliance for a Healthier Generation. To promote healthy choices this year, our school created a club of detectives who are always roaming the halls searching for students and adults who are making healthy choices. This could be by choosing healthy items to eat or by participating in healthy activities. Our detectives (both staff and students) take photos to document their findings. Each week some of these photos and stories are showcased on either the school announcements, our school webpage, or posted in the halls around the school. Students love to see pictures of themselves and their friends making healthy choices, and they always want to be caught doing good.
How did students and adults work together as a team?
Both students and adults were allowed to participate by taking photos and catching others making good choices. The positive encouragement increased at our school as detectives would recognize those they caught. “Congratulations ______. You were caught by the Healthy Detectives."
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
Students and staff are enjoying playing detective. They are having fun looking for healthy choices so it can easily be continued throughout the years to come.
What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
Some students in our school did not have access to technology such as a phone or a camera to take pictures. So the PE coaches partnered with the school library to allow students to check out mini iPads. Then they could travel the school with the iPad and take pictures. This made sure that anyone who wanted to participate was able to do so.
