Healthy PE Picnic at Escandon

I have adopted the Healthy Eating play of Healthy Picnicking for all grade levels K-5th during their PE times. I would love to start to incorporate this Healthy Eating play once a month at my campus so that I may be able to influence the way my students eat and snack. Each year, I pick a different healthy food for us. Last year our theme was Bring your Favorite Healthy snack and this year it was bring your favorite Fruit to PE. The students love talking and sitting down like a family. This may be the only time they get to converse with others without the involvement of technology. It helps with their interpersonal skills as well. We had great turnouts of fruit like mango, watermelon, cantaloupe, kiwi, jicama, apples, pears, oranges, tangerines, etc. A special thank you goes out to my healthy heroes in the cafeteria who helped every grade level by providing some type of fruit to any student that still needed some. It is an amazing display of teamwork.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

the challenge I faced was making sure that even the students that could not bring a fruit had something to eat too. I spoke with my cafeteria manager prior to my event and asked if she could order extra fruit so that we could provided some for those that were unable to bring some. The cafeteria was on board and made the event a huge success helping provide fruit for all k-5th students who did not bring something.

How did you accomplish your goals?

By working together with administrator, music teacher, and my partner in crime Coach Frank Alvarado, we made sure every child would have something to eat, people to talk to, and a family to eat with and talk about their day.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

I would like to continue this next year and make it a once a month thing. However each month will have a different theme tied to it and feature a different healthy food, snack, or milk, This way, students will be more selective in their healthy choices and maybe we can even grow the picnic to making a family day and invite our parents too. I hope to be able to get the community involved as well.
