New London Middle School used Healthy Eating funds to purchase and run a healthy snack cart. Before this, the only option was the candy store after school. The healthy snack cart is completely stocked and run by the Fuel Up to Play 60 student leaders. Each day FUTP 60 members wheel the cart down to the main hallway both before and after school. This cart provides healthy options for over 700 middle schoolers! Some of the healthy snacks include chocolate milk, string cheese, beef sticks, whole wheat crackers, granola bars, fruit bars, dried fruit, applesauce, and popcorn. On Fridays, the team also goes around before school with the traveling cooler to sell snacks to kids who might not otherwise come to the snack cart. Even with nothing priced over a dollar, the team has made a small profit each month, which is put back into trying new snacks for the cart!
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
The snack cart will continue hopefully for MANY years! While carefully pricing snacks just slightly above purchase price, we keep prices under $1 for any snack while also making enough money to sustain the cart!
What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
Initially, students were hesitant to visit the healthy snack cart due to the stigma of choosing healthy over chips/candy. Now, with such a great selection, middle school students are spreading the word to their friends about how good some of the snacks are and they have no problem visiting the cart each day!
What improvements have you seen at your school?
More and more middle school students are stopping by the snack cart every month. In our first month, only one case of chocolate milk was sold and only one pack of string cheese. Now at month 4, we will need three cases of chocolate milk and two of string cheese to make it through the month. Even staff members stop by to purchase the healthy options.
