Healthy Snacks For Healthy You!
The Koepsell Student Health Team hosted a holiday snack celebration for the entire school. The students wanted to remind everyone how important it is to eat healthy snacks, especially during the busy holiday season. The Health Team brainstormed and created a healthy snack message. They also voted and decided to offer Yogurt Parfait tastings to the students. We discussed what kind of toppings would be offered and what amounts. The students chose vanilla yogurt with the option of either strawberries or blueberries. Then we talked about other toppings for the yogurt. The team discussed having a “crunchy” option and decided to offer Cheerios or Frosted Flakes. Then we talked about if we should offer a “sweet” option- the students decided to offer sprinkles or mini chocolate chips. We looked at ways to measure the toppings to offer a tasty treat that was still healthy. We also reinforced the thought process of "always" and "sometimes" foods. Yogurt and fruit would be an always food, while the “sweet” additions would be sometimes foods and would be used in smaller amounts. The entire school enjoyed their holiday treat and the Health Team has received positive feedback from the teachers about their efforts to promote healthy snacks.

How did you accomplish your goals?

After thinking about ways to promote healthy snacks, the Student Health Team presented their ideas to the principal. Together we came up with a plan to promote healthy snacks during the holiday break. We worked with the principal to set up a schedule for our presentation. We also worked as a team to present the information and to create the yogurt parfaits.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

We worked very well as a team. We are really learning all about the importance of teamwork to make healthy changes at our school.
