Fremont Elementary teamed up with our local Farm to School chapter and brought healthy snacks into our school. Once a month a representative from Farm to School would come in and do a lesson with all the students in our school. We had sweet potatoes, zucchini, kale smoothies, and peppers. It was great to see students try foods they have never tried before, and many of them liked them! We enjoyed teaming up with the Farm to School coordinators and built a great relationship with them. I'm sure they will be back next year!

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

One of our biggest challenges was finding the day and time that worked best for everyone...we wanted all students to be able to be a part of these lessons. We did a lot of rearranging and worked together to make it happen each month. Being very flexible was key!

What improvements have you seen at your school?

With trying different foods that they may not normally try, students seem more willing to try foods at lunch now.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

It was fun having the FUTP60 students work with us to get the foods ready for the lessons. For the sweet potato lesson, the students mixed the potatoes in oil, put them on the pans to bake, and then served them to the classrooms. They really enjoyed this process!
