Hermes School Tower Garden

At Hermes School we have a tower garden. The tower garden teaches students about growing your own vegetables and it visits classrooms in our building. We started the seeds at the beginning of September after school was in session. Our current plan for the tower garden is to have it visit a different classroom each week of the school year. When we started assigning the tower garden visits there were 35 weeks of the school year to go, and we have 33 classrooms to visit. The students are amazed that they can actually see the growth of the plants. There have been comments like, "I like the sound of the water when it runs," "Boy, those lights are really bright!" and "My family likes to grow plants, too." This is an exciting experiment for our school and is providing a great example of scientific growing methods for our student body. Each teacher is given the choice of how to use the tower garden to instruct his or her own students and has been provided the curriculum that was given to us by Seven Generation. We chose to plant each of the seven rows of the tower with a different type of plants.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

One point of the learning curve is how to pollinate the vegetables without any insects inside the building.
