Hero Fuel Up with Dairy
Hero’s Fuel Up with Dairy Event We decided to honor out local heroes with lunch and held the first Hero’s Fuel Up with Dairy Event of the year. We built up the event by talking to our students during PE on how dairy plays such a big role in fueling up. Our student team presented to their classmates during the week leading up to the event. The students presented on “Why do you need dairy?” and “Why do you need calcium?” We had local firefighters and police officers come have lunch with the students and talk about how dairy plays a vital role in their daily lives and helps them fuel up. The students wanted to thank them for what they do in our community and made a “Thank You” card using milk cartons. The lessons on dairy and how to fuel up with dairy will continue through out the year as we will have the “Hero’s Fuel Up with Dairy” event every other month inviting a variety of heroes from our community and within our school district. My student team is already thinking of different ways to use milk cartons to honor the heroes as we did with the “Thank You” card. We have decided to designate a certain day of the month to collect the milk cartons and my team with collect only the milk cartons from students who drink all their milk and the carton is empty. We will have stickers for the students how finish their milk and we collect their milk carton. My team wants to create a Fuel Up To Play 60 “I drink milk to Fuel Up” bullentin board and add student’s names to it when their milk carton is collected. This was our student team’s first event and my team did a great job they decided which heroes they wanted to invite, they decided to make the “Thank You” card and also made the picture frame used during the event. They were door greeters and escorts for our VIP guests and helped setting up the day of the event. Since then they have been hard at work planning next “Hero’s Fuel Up with Milk” event. They decided they want to create the Fuel Up to Play 60 I Drink Milk bulletin board and researching what they can create with the milk cartons. Our district child nutrition director has provided guidance on what her department could do to help with this event. She helped me develop our “Hero’s Fuel Up with Dairy” theme, paid for the hero’s meals, provided extra milk and had her school staff help with the collection of the milk cartons for this first event. We decided a monthly “I drink milk to fuel up” day for our future events would work best and will advertise the day in advance ensure student aware and reminded drink their milk that day. Specify how the healthy eating play helped meet your campus wellness goals. One of my wellness goals is to increase dairy consumption by students and increase parent involvement in student health. The event provided the opportunity for our local heroes to speak to my students on the importance of dairy daily and how they fill up with dairy. I feel this and the creation of the Fuel Up To Play 60 I Drink Milk bulletin board will help increase the daily consumption of dairy here at school. The event also generated interest by parents having lunch with their children about the program. I was able to provide information and discuss Fuel Up To Play 60 with parents and ask for their support at home also.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

The team decided which heroes they wanted to invite, they made the “Thank You” card and also made the picture frame used during the event. They were door greeters and escorts for our VIP guests and helped setting up the day of the event.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
