Every month our HYPE club hosts a healthy taste test for the students and staff to sample. On Februaury 7, Cook-Wissahickon's HYPE council offered a healthier buffalo chicken dip, with ingredients provided by their Eat Right Now educator.
They substituted unhealthy ingredients with low-fat dairy ingredients, like homemade ranch and low-fat Greek yogurt, and served the dip with the choice of whole grain tortilla chips, cucumber or celery sticks.
How did students and adults work together as a team?
Every month the HYPE club members decide on a recipe they would like to showcase. The club advisor puts in a request for the required items and that is then supplied by our Nutrition Partner - Einstein. The advisor then emails the necessary staff members to ensure that the students can participate and help set up or clean up the event.
How did you accomplish your goals?
We hold weekly club meetings during lunch time. We are able to accomplish a lot during this time. Attendance is taken and there is always an agenda that is followed.
What improvements have you seen at your school?
I have had sixth and seventh graders have amazing leadership opportunities thru this initiative. The HYPE Monthly Taste Tests and weekly meetings has allowed some of my students to interact and socialize with others that they might never have had an opportunity to. To sum it up in one word, I would say it is: EMPOWERING!
