Healthy Eating Zone, Yoga room and murals to promote healthy eating

What improvements have you seen at your school?

The pictures are of our Healthy Eating Zone. The area was spruced up with additional tables, pots with planted herbs, pots with planted succulents, some vines, newly painted cement floor, wind chimes and signs. Students that bring in or choose healthy meals can request to sit out in the area and enjoy their healthy choices and some fresh air. Teachers report they are having to assign dates for kids to sit in the area because so many students are making the healthy eating choices.

How did you accomplish your goals?

Setting goals and working with timelines. It was important to have a schedule with deadlines and for everyone to know those dates and expectations for each area. This was VERY much a team effort, from the students, to the custodial staff to the teachers. Everyone is using the new areas and the kids are extremely excited about the changes and opportunities they have.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

It is our hope that the healthy eating zone will remain as is and students will continue to use it. I live near the school so I will come and water the plants in the summer so the are continues to look amazing for the teachers and students to enjoy. The yoga room will be used by, myself, a certified yoga instructor before and after school for both students and teachers. It is the hope to bring our ASD students in to do some lessons too.
