Improving Food Options in Our School

Lisa Dettelbach,   Thomas Jefferson Middle
Access to Healthy Foods

The Supreme Team at Thomas Jefferson Middle School had the opportunity to attend a recent food service meeting held at our school. The meeting was attended by the district food service coordinator, a Chartwells representative, and the teacher liaison. The weeks leading up to the meeting, the club members analyzed the menu, nutrition facts, and made a suggestion list of improvements. The adults were blown away by the group. Students presented their case to decrease the sugar, salt, and fat in the foods offered and made suggestions to influence students to make healthier food choices. Some of their ideas are being considered and we hope to see an improvement in our school food service.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Advisers and students met the weeks leading up to the meeting to review food service information. They came up with a list of food items they liked and disliked and identified items that were high in sugar, salt, and fat.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

Our students plan on continuing to attend each food service meeting in the future to ensure that they are an ongoing part of the process to include healthier items students will enjoy.
